KAN YA MA KAN - 2012

S Y N O P S I S

Kan Ya Ma Kan (A Thousand and One Nights) is a musical and balletic trilogy. The first act is performed to the acclaimed music of Scheherazade by Rimsky Korsakov, as we lift the veil on the mysterious East at the majestic court of Shahrayar. Here, passion, love and revenge illuminate the nights of the palace and plot the doomed destiny of a king…

The second act opens at the bazaar of extraordinary tales from the sands of time of A Thousand and One Nights. The oriental souk, with its vibrant aromas and colours, is enlivened by the cries of merchants eager to trade their goods. Following the timeless rhythms of Ravel’s Bolero, odalisques are paraded before buyers who are desperately seeking the most beautiful of them all. A cunning sorcerer introduces a magical beauty that dazzles all of the on-lookers, only for them to realise that they have been swindled by his mystical powers…

The final part of the performance is a return to heritage and tradition, with a journey to the days of the caravanserai, a unique place for encounters where travellers from all walks of life came to rest after long crossings, sharing their adventures, tales and songs.
